Bookcover – Alterman Black Gambits 1

Bookcover – Alterman Black Gambits 1

This chess bookcover shows a shaft of sunlight breaking through dark clouds above a loch. The cover is largely in brown and gold shades. The book title is The Alterman Gambit Guide – Black Gambits 1. Superimposed in front of the photo are a pair of crossed swords, one white, one black. In the case of black gambits, the black sword is in front and dominates.

The Alterman Gambit Guide – Black Gambits 1 is my second bookcover in a series of chess training books written by the grandmaster Boris Alterman. White Gambits 1 features a cloud shot; Black Gambits 1, as you see, shows sunlight breaking through clouds above a loch. Crossed swords are superimposed on the photo as symbols of combat, for chess is essentially a war game. On White Gambits books, the white sword dominates, on Black Gambits books, the black sword is to the front. Black Gambits 2, the third book, features a photo of lightning above the San Francisco skyline. All three books deal with the opening phase of the game.
